Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others.

Simon Marshall

When flying home from Zurich yesterday and listening to the safety brief I was struck by the relevance of these instructions. The message is to put your own oxygen mask on before you help anyone else with theirs, simply because if you aren’t in good shape, you won’t be able to look after anyone!

The reason this resonated for me was because I had been recording a series of videos on leadership (with the wonderful Whirling Chief team) – and one of the key messages that we had talked about was that leadership of others starts with leadership of yourself. It is only by understanding ourselves, how we think, how we see the world and most importantly understanding what really matters most to us (our Why) can we authentically connect with others in a meaningful way. They can then choose to follow the vision we see – oh and they follow this vision for themselves not for anyone else!

So metaphorically speaking, let’s all put on our own oxygen masks on before helping others.
